There is something about Kieran’s imagination – his ideas are full of detail – and as with The Legend of Podkin One Ear, it is partially that, which makes this book so glorious. ‘He built the world from leftover mouse guts….’ In this case – the book is certainly enough – but the above illustration of how some were sent out actually complement it – which is lovely to see. Many times, I wish they wouldn’t – the sweets a distraction, almost as though they don’t believe the book, the story is enough. Often publishers add a little something to books they send out as proofs. I would have had to ask if I could have a second, which would have been greedy. Sadly, my proof didn’t arrive like this – I wish it had – though I probably wouldn’t have wanted to open it.
